We were proud sponsors of the inaugural Global OTR Conference in Belgium last week.
As part of the conference programme, we were asked to join a discussion panel on OTR tyre repair. One of the topics we covered was how 3 of the key elements of an OTR tyre repair strategy – Process, Tools and Equipment, and Training – contribute to a successful stratgy.
We were obviously pleased to discuss this! We spend a lot of time on this topic with our customers – whether it’s learning from their experience and top tier operational set up, feeding in to and advising on a workshop optimisation project or supporting those starting a workshop from scratch.
Tools, tools, tools
As manufacturers of tyre repair equipment, we know how important the quality of the tools are. We see it in practice every single day. A good quality vulcanising system and the accompanying tools are the base requirement for consistently high quality repairs. Equipment and tools need to be available, appropriate, well cared for and used correctly.
However, that’s just one piece of the puzzle.
A tyre repair strategy needs structure
We emphasise in our training that all tyre repair needs to be aligned with recognised industry standards and governed by Safe Operating Procedures.
Building structured processes aligned with these guidelines ensures there are defined methods and standards at every stage of a repair’s journey. This will minimise risk and ensure consistency.
- People will work safely in a clean, orderly environment
- Tools and equipment will be fit for purpose, used correctly and maintained properly
- Data will be collected diligently and used to inform predicative maintenance schedules, maintain operational efficiency and guide training programmes.
And safe, effective processes, of course, ensure that repairs will be as successful as possible.
A structured process ensures that every tyre is assessed, repaired, and returned to service according to defined standards. It minimises risk by guiding technicians through inspection, damage classification, repair method selection, and final quality checks. A clear process also supports safety protocols, traceability, compliance, and continuous improvement making repairs repeatable, auditable, and aligned with operational goals.
People make everything happen
Even the best tools and processes are useless without skilled technicians. Tyre repair technicians are highly skilled personnel. They need the training and knowledge to assess damage, apply correct repair techniques, use equipment correctly and strictly uphold safety standards.
Training isn’t a one off event either. It’s an iterative process. People need reminders. Technology, regulations and recommendations develop and evolve. We suggest regular updates and refreshers to maintain and continuously build skill levels.
We really believe training should be well-rounded and that it’s important technicians understand the whole tyre anatomy not just each individual process step.
Building a team of highly skilled technicians is also brilliant for company culture. People who are knowledgable and skilled take pride in their work and hold themselves accountable. This is especially important in the high-risk environment of OTR tyre repair. Safety is everything.
The Monaflex difference
Our customers are often highly trained, skilled teams with huge experience in the OTR tyre repair world. We can support them with training and best practice advice in Monaflex equipment.
Some customers however are at a different point in the journey. They may be expanding their business or starting a new operation with a new team. We can make recommendations on appropriate equipment and tailor our Monaflex training according to your needs, offer advice where we’re qualified to do so and connect you with trusted partners if we think that is what is needed.
Whatever stage you are at in terms of bringing together processes, tools and training, we can tailor our offering to provide relevant and timely support.
